Machine learning has evolved from being a sub-field of artificial
intelligence to being the core of modern artificial intelligence. The
talk will start by giving an overview on this evolution with
highlights on how machine learning connects with other related terms,
such as big data and human intelligence. Then, the talk shares the
speaker's first-hand experience on machine learning research for
realizing modern artificial intelligence, such as bacteria
classification. The experience reveals some insights and difficulties
in conducting "realistic" machine learning research. Finally, the talk
concludes with some important future directions of machine learning
towards better artificial intelligence.
